Cannitello
Cannitello
is a small sea village
of
ancient origin, situated in
the heart of the Messina Straits, between Scilla and Villa San
Giovanni, in the province of Reggio Calabria (Italy). Thanks to the
short
distance that separates Calabria from Sicily, the village has a
lovely view that
extends up to the
Point of the Lighthouse (the mythical Cariddi described by Homer in
the Odyssey) and
carries on up to the
small Archipelago of the
“Eolie” Islands.
The
transparent
and clean sea is always one of the most important attractions of the
village:
the deep
water, the fish and the
variety
of marine
species
that can be seen with the naked eye, make the village an important
tourist center.
As a reminder of
the old systems of
electricity conduction from the continental part to the island, the
two high Pylons (224 meters) have been maintained -
donated
by the electricity
supply
company
(Enel) - respectively
connecting
the
Municipalities
of Villa San
Giovanni and Messina,
who
take care of the maintenance of both pylons
and supply
a magnificent and suggestive game
of
evening illumination.
In 2005
work construction
is expected to
start on the bridge
over
the Straits of Messina,
which
will join
Calabria to
Sicily. Cannitello will be
at
the center of one of the
Pylons of this bridge,
thus playing a significant
role in the "life" of the Messina Straits once more.
This, in fact, will be the greatest single span bridge
in
the world. The two pylons will be
approximately 400 meters
high for a total
length of 3,300 meters.
It is very
easy
to reach the village, considering that Cannitello is well connected
with Reggio Calabria, which is only 15 kms
away
while Messina is only 20 minutes, also thanks to the numerous
ferries. |
